In mining, solid-liquid separation is primarily used in ore and mineral processing as well as in tailings management.

After grinding, a suspension of solids and water is produced, which must be dewatered in order to obtain transportable solids and recover process water. This reduces costs, conserves resources, and prevents environmental pollution.

In brine processes, mechanical separation is used to remove solids or precipitates prior to subsequent thermal or chemical steps.

This reduces energy consumption and increases process reliability.

Precoat filtration is used to remove very fine or colloidal particles from process suspensions when conventional filtration methods reach their performance limits. It ensures stable filtration speeds and high filtrate clarity.

Filter aids are primarily used in mining when the process material is difficult to filter — for example, in the case of very fine, colloidal, or clayey particles that form dense or compressible filter cakes.

Filter aids may also be necessary in hydrometallurgical process solutions with precipitates in order to build up a stable precoat layer and ensure clear filtrates for downstream process steps. In easily filterable ores, however, they are usually dispensable.
